ELY, John (Jack) Edgar Born Sept. 21, 1923, in Los Angeles, Calif. Died October 1, 2010, in Lancaster, Calif., he was 87. John is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Ramona, his sisters; Jean Shaffer and Patricia Ely, daughters; Karen Saranita, Kerry Calvert, Beth Roberts; sons John, Dennis, and Matt Ely, 20 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded to Heaven by his sons Thomas Paul and John Patrick. John proudly served his country during World War II in the Merchant Marines, and later in Army Intelligence. He brought his family to Lancaster in 1969, and immediately became part of the community. John became president of Lancaster Pony League and later of Antelope Valley High school's booster club. He remained active with the community's youth in later years coaching softball into his 70s. John's passion in life was his family and spending time with them. His family requests that in lieu of flowers, people remember him by sharing a special day with their families. Viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, with a service to be held 11 a.m., Saturday, October 9, 2010, both at Halley-Olsen-Murphy, Chapel, 44802 Date in Lancaster. Interment to follow Saturday's service where he will be laid to rest at Good Shepherd Cemetery.
