Died peacefully, with her sons beside her, of heart failure on June 2, 2010. She was 82, and was, she said, ready to go. She had lived in Lancaster, in the same house for 53 years, after having moved here with Dr. Charles McQuarrie in 1956. She was a founding member and president of a number of local service groups, such as the Alpha Charter Guild, Junior Womens Club, McQUARRIE, Virginia Josephine the Hostesses, and as Parks Commissioner for the City of Lancaster, she helped bring the LPAC, The Eastside Pool facility, and perhaps most importantly to her, the Lancaster City Museum/Art Gallery to Lancaster. She is survived by her daughter Dr. Kimberly McDowell and her husband Jon of Powell, Wyoming, and their two sons Tyler and Ethan, her son Dr. Charles MacQuarrie and his wife Becky of Lancaster, and their daughter Quiller, and her son Matthew McQuarrie and his wife Monika of Lancaster, and their two daughters Chelsea and Selena. There will be a gathering for friends and family at Virginias house from 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, June 13, 2010. In lieu of flowers the family encourages memorial contributions to the Lancaster Museum/Art Gallery Associates to benefit their mission and programs.
