McLAUGHLIN, GERALD L. JERRY
McLAUGHLIN, Gerald L. 'Jerry' Born July 7, 1935, in Des Moines, Iowa. Passed away May 17, 2010, Lancaster, Calif. He grew up in Adel, Iowa, and has lived in the Antelope Valley for 45 years. He joined the Army and served his country in the Korean War as a member of the 187th Airborn Unit as a very proud paratrooper from 1952 to 1955. He met and then married the love of his life Barbara in 1956. He worked as a carpenter for Schwartz Construction of Ottumwa, Iowa while moon lighting as a mail clerk in the local post office. In 1965, he, his wife, and 4 young children boarded an Amtrak train bound for Los Angeles, Calif. In Los Angeles he found work as a Journeyman Carpenter on bridge crews and heavy construction. In 1965, he relocated his family to Quartz Hill, Calif., still working and attending night school to obtain his contractors license. In 1968, he received his California Contractors license which he still held at the time of his death. During the course of his business career, he began as a general contractor, sole proprietor before becoming one of the largest corporate general contractors in this area during the 1980s and 1990s as McLaughlin Construction, Inc. This was a family owned and operated business and Jerry taught his children the construction trade in which they all remain today. Jerry was a proud man and very proud of his accomplishments. There are hundreds of buildings in the Antelope Valley and surrounding areas built by Jerry and the many people he mentored and employed over his 50 year career. He lost his wife Barbara on May 18, 2006, and joined her again for eternity on May 17, 2010. Survived by his sons Greg McLaughlin of Lancaster, Calif., Pat McLaughlin (Susan) of Quartz Hill, Calif., daughters Karen Bowe (Darin) of Tehachapi, Calif., and Cindy Cordes (Allen) of Lancaster, Calif., grandchildren, Patrick McLaughlin, Chanell McLaughlin, Holly Cordes and Heidi Cordes, great-grandchildren, Ian, Cameron, Christian and David. Also survived by his brothers Brian and Dave, sisters Gail, Carole, Janet and Kathleen. Preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Florence McLaughlin. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, May 21, 2010, at Joshua Memorial Park & Mortuary, Lancaster.
