ELLIS Jr., Edward Tom 73, of Ventura, California passed away Friday, May 7, 2010. He was born October 2, 1936, in Piqua, Ohio, and moved to Santa Monica, California at age seven with his mother, Ethel Stuart, and sister, Coral Kaplowitz. Tom attended Santa Monica High School; where he played football, and participated in the High School Civil Air Patrol. After graduating High School in 1954, Tom enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as an Air Traffic Controller in Del Rio, Texas; Guam; and South Korea. After leaving the Air Force, Tom joined the FAA, serving as an Air Traffic Controller at Los Angeles and Honolulu International Airports, and at the Air Traffic Control Center in Palmdale, California, where he retired as a Supervisor in 1992. In retirement, Tom stayed active in a wide variety of jobs and activities including work as an Air Traffic Control Consultant, and, together with his wife Jane, as an extra in television and film productions. Tom enjoyed traveling, including trips to over 30 countries. At home, he enjoyed bicycling and getting together for lunch with his friends in a neighborhood men's group. Tom was a kind, compassionate, and loving Husband, Father, and Uncle. Through his guidance, character, and devotion, he was an exceptional role model for his children, grandchildren, niece, and nephews. Tom's companionship, dedication, and humor will be forever remembered by his loving wife of 18 years, Jane Short Ellis; his children Doug Ellis, Stephanie Davis, and Missy Ellis; five grandchildren; step-children David Short and Julie Short Zollinger; five step-grandchildren; niece Elizabeth Kaplowitz, and nephews Guy Feltman, Steve Feltman, Chris Roland, and Jeff Kaplowitz. Private services were held Saturday, May 15, 2010. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Ventura County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, 250 W. Citrus Grove, Suite 200, Oxnard, CA 93036. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura. Condolences may be left at
