Obituary Notices and Memorials

HAMMOND, HL 81, of Lancaster, died peacefully on February 8, 2010. Born in Oklahoma, he was raised in Kansas City. HL was a star athlete at Wyandotte High School before joining the Navy in 1945. Although he returned to Kansas City, HL eventually settled in California which became his home. He worked as a milkman for various dairies and also delivered newspapers. In 1992, he retired to Lancaster with his wife Bess. HL enjoyed volunteering at Palmdale High School, working for the Jet Hawks and having breakfast at Crazy Otto's. Like Bess, his greatest joy was his grandchildren. After Bess died, HL remarried Ratana who lovingly cared for him until his death. HL is survived by children Diane (Richard), Kathleen, Julie (Joe), Sherry, Rick (Patty), Casey (Roger) and Dan (Janet), 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Bess and son Bob. Services will be held at 1 p.m., on Saturday, February 13, 2010, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Palmdale. Graveside services will follow. HL will be loved and missed for his humor, his kindness, his work ethic and, of course, his never ending supply of tootsie rolls.
