Obituary Notices and Memorials

MURPHY, Cynthia Louise On January 29, 2010, Cynthia Louise Murphy lost her courageous battle against ALS. Cindy was born in Rochester, N.H., on June 10, 1947, to Richard and Elinor Somerset. In 1955, Cindy moved to sunny Southern California with parents and brother, Tom. In 1966, while attending San Fernando Valley State College (CSUN) she met David, they would spend the rest of their lives together. Cindy and David built a beautiful life with daughter Colleen in Van Nuys, Calif., and Mesa, Ariz. Cindy and David were looking forward to celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary on February 14, 2010. She was a computer programmer and systems analyst for various companies including Blue Cross/Blue Shield. After retiring, she pursued her AA Degree in Interior Design at Antelope Valley College. Cindy had great love for her family, friends, and pets. She loved reading, cooking, shopping, spending time with friends, and being 'in joy.' Every Fourth of July she could be found enjoying the fireworks on the beach in Del Mar. She volunteered at Child Crisis Center in Mesa, Ariz., and loved children of all ages. After being diagnosed with ALS, Cindy remained positive and was determined to raise awareness about Lou Gehrig's Disease. She was the first person to use a communication device on the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon. She made presentations at CSUB about living with ALS. Her quote made her positive attitude clear to all, 'ALS has control of my body, but I control my mind, my spirit, and my scenery.' Many people came out to support Team Cindy at the MDA Walk and Roll in 2007. Team Cindy was always easy to identify by her signature color, pink. Survived by husband David, daughter Colleen DeBratto, son-in-law Andrew, mother Elinor McKinnon, step-father Thomas McKinnon, brother Thomas Somerset, sister-in-law Susan, and niece Mallory. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Muscular Dystrophy Association,, or The ALS Association, 27001 Agoura Road Suite 250, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday February 13, 2010, at St. Paul's, 502 West Avenue K, Lancaster. Please wear pink in honor of Cindy. Everyone who knew her will miss Cindy's smile, enthusiasm for life and caring for all those around her.
