ORR, SR., JOHN SAMUEL
John (Sam) Samuel Orr Sr. was born on September 4, 1915 in Springdale Pennsylvania to Chambers and Margaret Orr. He went home to be with our Lord on January 9, 2010, at the age of 94. He passed away peacefully at Tehachapi Hospital. Sam will be lovingly remembered by family and friends at a Memorial Service to be held on Saturday January 23, 2010, at Mountain Bible Church, 630 Maple St., Tehachapi, at 11:00 a.m. Sam came to California in 1944 as an Industrial Photographer from Pennsylvania, where he spent a number of years as the photographer for the American Water Works. Upon arriving in California he accepted a position with Northrop Aircraft, in Hawthorne. In 1949 Sam set up Northrop's photo lab at Edwards Air Force Base. Sam did all of the film processing, took air to air photos and did Public Relations for Northrop. He met Joyce Lindamood while she was working at the Base Photo Lab. Theywere later married on November 29, 1952. Together they had two children, Roanna Popichak and John (Jack) Samuel Orr Jr. who blessed their lives. Sam and Joyce resided in Lancaster, until 1974 when they moved to Tehachapi California. Sam retired from Northrop Corporation in 1977. Sam also enjoyed photography outside of work. He entered his photographs into the Professional Division at the Antelope Valley Fair and received a Sweepstakes Award.He also served as a judge for the Photographic Division for many years. Many of Sam's photos have appeared in well known publications including National Geographic, Western Livestock and Life Magazine. He has also been featured in the Tehachapi News. Not only did Sam love photography, he had a life long interest in bird hunting in Pennsylvania as well as in California. In later years he enjoyed trap shooting where he developed friendships with members of the Tehachapi Sportsman Club. Another passion of Sam's was singing. He sang in a quartet as second tenor, with his brother and cousins while living in Pennsylvania. Singing in church choirs also gave him joy. Sam had a sense of humor and could always put a smile on your face. Sam is survived by his wife Joyce Orr of Tehachapi, his daughter Roanna and Steve Popichak of Nevada, his son Jack and Dawn Orr of Tehachapi, his four granddaughters, Renee, Jennifer, Sheri and Angela and seven great grandchildren. Sam was preceded in death by his brother Howard Orr of Illinois and his sister Rachel Varner of Indiana. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made in his name to Optimal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 80538 Bakersfield CA 93380-0538, or to Mountain Bible Church. Wood Family Funeral Service, Inc. handled the arrangements.
