Obituary Notices and Memorials

PANTON, Catherine
PANTON, Catherine East A long time resident of Lancaster, California passed away peacefully December 23rd, at home in San Diego, surrounded by her loving family. Katie was born December 12, 1913 in Altoona, Kansas and was married to Woodrow Leon 'Pat' Panton, also of Altoona, on November 29, 1939. They moved to San Diego during World War II, and remained in California the rest of their lives. Katie always said she loved to work, and except for those few years where she stayed home to raise her two children through high school age, she always had a job. After she finally retired from Los Angeles County Social Services Department in Lancaster, she traveled extensively, with Pat until his death in 1990, then with friends. She managed to visit virtually every continent except Antarctica, and loved every experience she had and the friends she shared them with. Katie volunteered faithfully through her life at her local church and when her two kids were grown helped to run the soup kitchen at Lancaster United Methodist Church. She also volunteered at the local hospital working in the gift shop for several years. Katie loved to square and round dance and spend time with dear friends. Dancing well into her late eighties, she used to tell about how they would go to entertain the "old folks" at the retirement home. She is remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and always kind spirit. She is survived by her son Rex Panton of San Diego, California, daughter Teri Barclay of Anchorage, Alaska, and granddaughters, Marcy Panton Jelinek, Lauren Panton Wold, and Allison Panton, all of whom live in Texas. A memorial service will be held in Lancaster, California on January 30th, 4pm, at Lancaster United Methodist Church. As Katie suffered from severe dementia in her final years, her family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
