Antelope Valley to commemorate Sept. 11

Here is a list of events planned to commemorate the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
Lancaster

LANCASTER - Antelope Valley Christian Center will have a special Sept. 11 "Remembrance and Recognition" service Sunday, Sept. 8.

Representatives from local law enforcement, fire departments and Antelope Valley Hospital have been invited to give an overview of the impact of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Services are scheduled for 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. at Antelope Valley Christian Center, 304 West Lancaster Blvd. For information, call (661) 949-7200.

LANCASTER - Antelope Valley Hospital is inviting the community to join with hospital employees in a "Time of Reflection" at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11 on the northeast corner of the campus, immediately outside the employee cafeteria.

Hospital Chief Executive Officer Mathew Abraham encourages community members to donate blood. The Blood Donation Center is located in the Outpatient Services lobby and is open Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All walk-in donors will be accommodated or individuals can call (661) 949-5622 to make an appointment.

LANCASTER - The City of Lancaster will host a special Patriot Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Sept. 11 in front of Lancaster City Hall. Residents are invited to attend this event of remembrance and patriotism.

Participants include the El Dorado Elementary School Honor Choir, the Tehachapi Mountain Pipes & Drums and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and Fire Department. The United Way of the Antelope Valley will join with the City of Lancaster to pay tribute to the 9-11 victims from Los Angeles County.

LANCASTER - Antelope Valley College will have a brief program at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11 at the flagpole in front of the Administration Building, followed by a reception in the administration building. To further commemorate this day, we ask you to wear red, white and blue to symbolize the freedoms we share.
Palmdale

PALMDALE - The Department of Motor Vehicles will have a tribute to America's heroes for their faith and courage, to their families for their sacrifice and sorrow and to our nation. "United We Stand" is 8 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the DMV office, 2260 D East Palmdale Blvd.

PALMDALE - The Antelope Valley Service Organization Association will have the POW/MIA Day Ceremony and Tribute to 9-11 at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at McAdam Park, 38115 30th St. East. The ceremony will honor local POWs and MIAs from the Antelope Valley as well as those who lost their lives during the Sept. 11 attacks.

PALMDALE - Unity Church of Antelope Valley, 39149 Eighth St. East between avenues P and Q, will hold its annual "Unity World Day of Prayer" at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

During the prayer vigil, attendees will join with others in prayer and meditation, as well as having prayer requests forwarded to Silent Unity.

Los Angeles County

The Los Angeles County Fire Department is planning to host a Fire Station Memorial Flag Ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at each of the County's 157 fire stations, and at its Firefighters Memorial at headquarters, at 1320 N. Eastern Ave., Los Angeles.

The ceremonies will take place simultaneously across the county at exactly 8:46 a.m., to mark the moment when the first of the two World Trade Center towers was attacked, and pay tribute to all of the lives lost in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and in Pennsylvania.

At 8:46 a.m., a flag ceremony will take place in the front of each fire station. Residents will be invited to participate in the ceremony and place flowers or other mementos at the base of the flagpole. Fire station personnel will provide each guest with a commemorative ceremony program featuring the photographs and names of 13 members of the New York City Fire Department who perished in the attacks.
Other areas

LITTLEROCK - A remembrance ceremony to honor firefighters and policemen on the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks will be from noon until 2 p.m. at the Alpine Grange.

The main speaker at the Wednesday, Sept. 11 event will be Lew Stults, representing Congressman Howard P. "Buck" McKeon. The Grange hall is at 8650 East Ave. T-8.

A representative of Assemblyman George Runner also will address the crowd.

Invocation will be given by Pastor Jeff Loewen. Music will be provided by Chris Tarke and his Tehachapi Pipes and Drums group. The featured singer will be Rebecca Andrade, 13.

Local firefighters and sheriff's deputies are invited to participate.
