This story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press September 10, 2002.

American Legion Post to honor 9-11 victims

PALMDALE - American Legion Post 771, in conjunction with the city, will have a memorial service for the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Poncitlan Square.

Keynote speakers will be state Sen. William J. "Pete" Knight, Assemblyman George Runner, Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford, Capt. Scott Zbinden of Los Angeles County Fire Station 37, Lt. Col. Cleo Wright, commander of U.S. Air Force Plant 42 and Cedric Jackson, chaplain for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The Highland High School ROTC will post the colors.

Ledford will read a proclamation declaring Sept. 11 as Patriots Day.

"We are here to honor the innocent lives lost," Legion spokesman Walter Ward said.

Benediction will be given by Rabbi Eli Corvin.
Attack anniversary events slated at base

EDWARDS AFB - Edwards Air Force Base will commemorate the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with several events during the day to pay tribute to all who died.

A special memorial service will begin at 8:30 a.m., with Maj. Gen. Doug Pearson, Air Force Flight Test Center commander, and Les Borderlon, Air Force Flight Test Center executive director, as speakers. Jewish, Christian and Muslim scriptures will be read.

A moment of silence will be observed at 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane struck the World Trade Center in New York, followed by taps and a 21-gun salute to honor those who died.

A retreat ceremony will take place at the base flagpole at 4:45 p.m., to close the end of the day.

For locations of and directions to the events, call (661) 277-4127.
