Airport council to hear from El Segundo mayor

This story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press March 19, 1999.

By VALLEY PRESS STAFF

PALMDALE - El Segundo Mayor Mike Gordon will speak at the Palmdale Regional Airport Advisory Council luncheon set for noon, Tuesday, April 20, at the Antelope Valley Country Club.

Gordon has been speaking in other communities on the topic, "Southern California needs a truly regional airport plan."

Gordon is leading El Segundo opposition to expansion of Los Angeles International Airport. Under the proposed expansion plans for LAX, Gordon points out that the passenger count is expected to grow from 60 million to 98 million a year.

It's expected that cargo handling will increase from 1.8 million tons a year to 4.8 million and that there will be 3,000 flights per day compared to 2,000 at present.

The expansion plans will mean that there will be one flight taking off or landing every 25 seconds, Gordon estimates.

"We believe the scale of the expansion proposed for LAX defies effective mitigation," he said in a March 3 meeting in San Bernardino.

Gordon said that "A genuine Southern California regional airport system is more than LAX, Ontario, and El Toro airports. Nine other airports are anxious to play a role in the Southern California Air Commerce Marketplace including Burbank, George, John Wayne, Long Beach, March, Norton, Palmdale, Palm Springs and Point Mugu."
