Airport development key issues just don't fly

This story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press February 19, 1997.

LANCASTER - Antelope Valley Regional Partnership members Tuesday took a look at another airport report outlining key issues for developing the facility as identified by the partnership's Airport Strategy Group.

The conclusion: Nothing substantial appears to be happening at Palmdale Regional Airport.

Other than the prospect of increased freight business, the airport's immediate future doesn't seem to include a bustling passenger terminal.

In a memo prepared by Russell T. Bird, a planning analyst for Palmdale's public works department, some of the issues outlined were economic development, ownership of the airport, commercial service and future transportation additions like a high-speed rail.

However, partnership members agreed that studies recommended to show that people would use more commercial services if there were more destinations are not going to convince airlines to start service here.

If there is a need, several members said, the airlines will come up with a plan for utilizing the facilities. However, aiming to increase freight business - an idea being kicked around more seriously during the past year - is what members think will make progress.

Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford agrees that the region's leaders must work to change the misconceptions of some Los Angeles City Council members and L.A. Department of Airports officials.

Lancaster Mayor Frank Roberts said Palmdale will probably have to step out from the shadow of the airports department to shine.

"Let's wait for the $1 million in improvements before we claim a revolution," Ledford joked about some budgeted improvements to the airport.

Partnership members had their first look at the document Tuesday, but they are scheduled to take a closer look and add any missing issues from the list during their March meeting.

One element officials believe could have an impact on Palmdale's airport is that Burbank Airport is not likely to expand because of growing public discontent over noise and pollution.
