| Fuentes finally finds success on the roadLancaster pitcher Brian Fuentes struck out 10 and allowed just five hits to record his first win on the roadThis story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press August 9, 1998.By DAVE RASBACH Valley Press Staff Writer RANCHO CUCAMONGA - Home is where the heart is. Home is also where the victories have been for Lancaster starter Brian Fuentes this year. Fuentes entered Saturday's start against Rancho Cucamonga with a 4-0 record at Lancaster Municipal Stadium but and 0-5 record on the road. At press time, that all looked to would change. Thanks to a strong outing by Fuentes, the JetHawks took a 8-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning in front of 6,021 Quakes faithful at The Epicenter. Fuentes retired the first nine batters he faced, including five in a row on strike outs over the first and second innings. He struck out the side in the second inning on 15 pitches. Leadoff batter Brian McClure was the first Quake to reach base, slapping a 2-1 pitch from Fuentes into right field for a fourth-inning double. But he was retired two pitches later when Robbie Kent bounced a grounder off Fuentes. The ball deflected to Jason Regan at third base, who fired to Giomar Guevara at second in time to tag out McClure. Fuentes found himself in a little more trouble in the fifth. The Quakes gathered three hits off the Lancaster left-hander, but Fuentes twice combined with shortstop Ramon Vazquez to pickoff runners at second base. The JetHawks provided Fuentes just enough offense. Cirilo Cruz Jr. singled in Vazquez and Brendan Kingman's sacrifice fly scored Guevara in the first inning.
Kingman added an oppositefield home run in the sixth inning, before Cruz doubled in Vazquez with a shot down the leftfield line in the seventh. |
