Gryboski earns 1st victory

Kevin Gryboski earned his first victory in the Cal League as the JetHawks exploded for 10 runs.

LAKE ELSINORE - It took one year and 46 games of a second season, but Kevin Gryboski finally has a Cal League victory.

In his 31st appearance as a JetHawk, Gryboski, who went 0-7 last season and just missed picking up his first victory during two impressive starts earlier this year, was the winning pitcher in the JetHawks' 10-7 victory over Lake Elsinore on Tuesday in front of an announced crowd of 2,038 at The Diamond.

"Finally," Gryboski said. "It feels good now, but it's more important that the team is back to .500 (23-23)."

Gryboski (1-2), who came on in relief of starter John Kelly in the bottom of the fifth inning, was the beneficiary of a Lancaster offense that generated 10 runs and 13 hits one night after Brian Tokarse shut it down.

Brendan Kingman led Tuesday's charge, picking up the JetHawks' first four-hit game of the season.

But even with all those hits, the JetHawks needed to rely on defense in the sixth inning to secure the victory.

Trailing 8-7, Lake Elsinore loaded the bases with one out on two hits and a walk off Gryboski. But Greg Morris bounced to Joel Ramierez at shortstop, who flipped to Adonis Harrison to start an inning-ending double play.

Aaron Scheffer also loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but got Jason Dewey to fly out to Luis Tinoco to pick up his third save of the season.

"Once again, they had the winning run at the plate in the ninth," JetHawks manager Rick Burleson said. "But that's baseball. We'll take the win."

Lancaster erased a 3-1 deficit after the first inning with its first set of back-to-back homers this season.

Michael Moore crushed an 0-1 pitch over the left-field foul pole for a two-run homer, and Karl Thompson followed with a shot over the left-field fence. Moore's homer was his first of the season, while Thompson's was his second.

Lancaster added three runs in the third, thanks to a throwing error by Lake Elsinore third baseman Freddy Diaz. Cirilo Cruz and Brendan Kingman both scored on the play, and Moore ended up on third. He scored three pitches later on Thompson's single.

But Lake Elsinore refused to go away quietly. Jeff Guiel sacrificed in a run in the bottom of the fourth, before Kevin Ham doubled in two runs and scored on Juan Rodriguez's single to cut the JetHawks' lead to one run.

"I guess we don't feel comfortable up by five," Burleson said.
