![]() | JetHawks run over in StampedeLancaster blew leads in both games of a double-header and were swept by San Bernardino, 6-5 in 11 innings and 7-4 in the nightcap. This story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press May 7, 1998.By DAVE RASBACH Valley Press Staff Writer SAN BERNARDINO - Once is forgivable, but twice is hard to stomach. The Lancaster JetHawks blew leads twice in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader at San Bernardino and ended up losing 6-5 in 11 innings. In the nightcap, the Stampede have a 2-1 lead in the third inning at press time thanks to a second-inning solo home run by Jeff Auterson. Casey Snow's bases-loaded single with one out and a 1-2 count in the bottom of the 11th of the first game scored Wynter Phoenix with the winning run. "With two strikes, I was just trying to put the ball in play," Snow said. Lancaster had held a 5-4 lead entering the inning thanks to Jason Regan's solo home run in the top half of the frame. The homer, which was Regan's second of the season, was crushed well over the left-field fence off Stampede reliever Brent Husted (3-1). But Lancaster reliever Russ Koehler (1-3) gave up a leadoff infield single to Ramon Moreta. Phoenix singled to put Moreta on third base. Luke Allen then blooped a single down the left-field line to score Moreta and tie the game 5-5. Unfortunately, that wasn't the only time Lancaster let a lead slip away with the game on the line against a San Bernardino team that entered the game 1-16 when trailing after the seventh inning. Allen also ruined Lancaster's hopes for a victory in the seventh inning. The JetHawks held a 4-2 advantage entering the bottom of the seventh inning, which should have been the final frame because of the doubleheader. But Aaron Scheffer, who came in to close the game, allowed back-to-back one-out bloop hits to Rick Saitta and Jamie Goudie. Moreta singled in Saitta with a hard-hit shot out of the reach of Lancaster shortstop Ramon Vazquez. Moreta almost got the JetHawks out of trouble, though, as he took a wide turn at first and was caught in a rundown for the second out of the inning. But even that mental error couldn't save the JetHawks. Scheffer walked Phoenix, before giving up an RBI double to Allen. The game was the first between the two teams after two consecutive rainouts Monday and Tuesday. It looked early like the time off wasn't going to affect the JetHawks adversely. After spotting the Stampede the first run of the game in the bottom of the second, the JetHawks came back with an RBI double from Brendan Kingman and an RBI triple from Luis Tinoco to take a 2-1 lead. The Stampede tied the game with a fifth-inning run, but Karl Thompson bounded a single back up the middle to score Tinoco and Michael Moore.
Pete Zamora, who gave up Thompson's single, was key to keeping the Stampede in the game. After Thompson, who was the first batter he faced, Zamora retired 13 of the next 15 batters he faced, including sitting the JetHawks in order in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings. |
