The Valley Press ![]() Top of this page | JetHawks commit club record eight errors vs. San JoseThis story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press August 19, 2001.By ALAN HENDRY Valley Press Staff Writer LANCASTER -- The Lancaster JetHawks were given Saturday afternoon off not taking any batting practice before the final game of their homestand. The JetHawks could have used the extra time for a little more fielding practice, as Lancaster would go on to committ a season-high seven errors as the JetHawks trailed 14-13 in the seventh against visiting San Jose Saturday night at JetHawks Stadium. The seven errors tied a franchise record as the two teams combined for 10 errors through six innings as both starting pitchers were hit hard early. The 27 combined runs through six innings was also a season high for Lancaster, as Brian Gordon brought the JetHawks to within a run with an inside the park home run in the bottom of the seventh. JetHawks right-hander Duaner Sanchez retired the side in the first, but did not make it out of the second. Sanchez gave up five hits, one walk, hit one batter as Lancaster made four errors to give San Jose an early 6-0 lead. Reliever Saul Montoya did not fair much better, giving up two home runs. The first, a two-run shot by San Jose third baseman Angel Chavez in the third inning, came after Lancaster first baseman Ryan Jones dropped what would have been the third out on a pop foul by San Jose's Justin Hall. Lancaster battled back from a 10-4 deficit, scoring six in the fourth inning to tie the game 10-10. Shortstop Matt Kata hit his 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot, Jones hit a two-run single and designated hitter Jeff Waldron hit a two-run double. San Jose quickly grabbed the lead in the top of the fifth, as Lancaster reliever Michael Garber gave up four hits and the catcher J.D. Closser made two errors, which led to two runs. San Jose left fielder Jake Messner and catcher Guillermo Rodriguez also homered for the Giants, as Rodriguez came within a triple of hitting for the cycle.
