JetHawks season opener vs. D'BacksThis story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press December 14, 2000
By ED HARBOUR LANCASTER - The Lancaster JetHawks will begin their working relationship with the Arizona Diamondbacks next year in the same way they began with the Mariners five years ago. Wednesday, the JetHawks announced that on Apr. 2, 2001, the team will play the parent club Diamondbacks in an exhibition at Lancaster. In April of 1996, the JetHawks squared off against the Mariners to start the season. "We're absolutely tickled to death that the schedule worked," JetHawks general manager Kevin Younkin said. "We're happy to be able to showcase our stadium and really showcase the Valley." The Monday game fit into the schedule because the Diamondbacks end their preseason in Anaheim the day before and officially start their season the following day against the Dodgers. "The Dodgers play the Brewers for one game to start their season," Younkin said, "and then get Arizona." The major league club is expected to work out at the Hangar and play the exhibition game, but not necessarily in that order. "My understanding is that they'll come over in the morning (from Anaheim) and work out, then get ready and have the exhibition game," Younkin said, "but that could all change and hasn't been finalized." Along with the exhibition game and a new affiliation for Lancaster, the JetHawks will also host the 2001 California and Carolina Leagues All-Star Game in June. "What better way to start our first year affiliation with a brand new team?" Younkin said. "In addition to that, we have a lot of other things like the All-Star game going on. We'll have more excitement here since probably the first year." For several current members of the Arizona roster, April's game will not be their first trip to the Hangar. Diamondbacks ace and reigning Cy Young winner Randy Johnson was part of the Mariners contingent in 1996. Third baseman Matt Williams rehabbed for two games in 2000 with the High Desert Mavericks at the Hangar. "This year's schedule affords us the opportunity to play in Lancaster the day before the official opening of the 2001 season," Arizona general manager Joe Garagiola Jr. said. "It's always exciting as opening day approaches, and I fully expect that excitement will accompany our club to Lancaster for this exhibition."
