JetHawks rely on new addition

Lancaster's newest addition, Sheldon Fulse, hit a two-run triple to give the JetHawks a win over San Bernardino

LANCASTER - The Lancaster JetHawks returned home Saturday night after a pretty successful seven-game road trip.

Lancaster manager Mark Parent couldn't have been happier winning five of seven against Visalia, San Jose and Mudville.

The big factor in the road trip was the pitching, and Saturday night back at the friendly confines of the Hangar, things didn't change.

Lancaster's Jeff Heaverlo and San Bernardino's Carlos Garcia made the first of six games between the two teams a pitcher's duel.

But it was Craig Kuzmic's RBI single, followed by newcomer Sheldon Fulse's two-run triple in the eighth inning that gave Lancaster a 5-1 win in front of 4,032 fans.

Garcia was chased after giving up a leadoff double to Terrmel Sledge. Stampede reliever Wade Parrish got Juan Silvestre to pop out to first before intentionally walking Bo Robinson after falling behind in the count.

Kuzmic then sent a 3-2 delivery into left for the go-ahead run. Fulse then tripled in his second and third runs in his third game as a JetHawk.

Scott Maynard followed by singling in Fulse to complete the four-run eighth.

Heaverlo, making his eighth start of the season, was in control, retiring the first eight San Bernardino batters before giving up a single to No. 9 hitter Jesus Feliciano.

Heaverlo, who was relieved by Kenny Rayborn in the eighth, didn't figure into the decision for the second consecutive outing.

Heaverlo allowed one run on six hits and one walk. He struck out six.

Friday night, Lancaster starter Enmanuel Ulloa pitched six solid innings, allowing four hits and one earned run in a 2-1 win over Mudville.

Brandon Parker, who pitched a flawless ninth Saturday night with two strikeouts, allowed one hit in the ninth Friday night, but threw 13 pitches in a final out battle for his California League-leading 10th save.

Garcia allowed eight hits in seven-plus innings of work. The right-hander lost a no-hitter in the third via a double by Lancaster leadoff Corey Freeman.

Following that, he pitched out of jams in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fifth, Maynard opened with a double and advanced to third on Harvey Hargrove's groundout to second. But he struck out Freeman and got Willie Bloomquist to line out to short.

The JetHawks tied the game 1-1 in the sixth inning.

After Sledge singled to lead off, he stole second and advanced to third on a errant throw by Stampede catcher John Hernandez into center.

Robinson followed with a fly ball to right, deep enough for Sledge to score standing up, despite arriving a the same time as the throw.

San Bernardino took the 1-0 lead in the fourth. After Michael Collins walked, Darren Ingram hit a one-out double to center to advance Collins to third.

Jimmy Gonzalez hit a grounder to second, forcing Bloomquist to get the out at first and allow the run to score.

Maynard finished 3-for-4 with one RBI while Kuzmic and Sledge each finished 2-for-4. Freeman also had two hits.
