Valley Press QUARTZ HILL - Dan Brown and Gary Smith didn't know it at the time, but Thursday's Southern Section Division III tennis first-round playoff match against Long Beach Poly came down to their final set. The Rebels' top doubles team came up big, defeating Poly's Kyle Kinney and Ed Taylor, 6-3, to secure a 10-8 first-round win for Quartz Hill (19-2). "We didn't even tell them," Rebels coach Dennis Smith said. "But all the kids on the side knew it and (Brown and Smith) were able to pull it out." Quartz Hill's three singles players went 9-1 as No. 1 T.J. St. Marie won all three sets, upping his season record to 57-4. Andre Garkanian won all three of his sets, too, and No. 3 Paul Whang won two of his three. Quartz Hill awaits today's coin flip to find out where Saturday's second-round match against Santa Monica Crossroads will take place. "This was a great tennis match today," Smith said. "It was close the whole way."
TennisBrentwood 17, Palmdale 1 BRENTWOOD - Michael Castro was the lone Falcon to win a set in a first-round match against the top-seeded team in Division III. "They were pretty legit," Palmdale coach John Konrad said. "As good a team as we've ever seen." Castro, a junior, beat Brentwood's No. 2 singles player for the Falcons, who came in third place in the Golden League. "It's an honor to make the playoffs," Konrad said. "It's our goal at the beginning of the year and we succeeded in that."
SoftballRosamond 2, Bishop 0 BISHOP - The Rosamond High School softball team finished its most successful regular season in school history Thursday afternoon with a win at Bishop. Shanell Grimes had two hits and Jocelyn Soria scored what turned out to be the game-winning run in the first inning after she singled and then stole second. "It's huge for us," Rosamond coach Krista Reader said. "The girls have put a really great year together." Cassie Benson earned her 16th win in the pitcher's circle, giving up five hits for the Roadrunners (18-4, 8-2). Knight 17, Antelope Valley 2, 5 innings LANCASTER - Shelby Slagle went 3-for-3 with four RBI for the Hawks (17-9, 10-4), who finish the regular season in a tie for third place in the Golden League with Quartz Hill. Jasmine Lopez went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in a seven-run third inning. Kory Cascarella went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a double and a triple. Knight will flip a coin on Saturday to determine the third place team in the postseason. The playoff brackets will be released on Monday. Littlerock 15, Eastside 2, 5 innings LANCASTER - The Lobos' won their first league game in the season finale. Terra Parker went 4-for-5 with four runs, Breana Hunt went 2-for-3 with a double, Cori Haynes went 3-for-4 with a double and Amanda Bennett went 2-for-3 for the Lobos. Janell Oliveras struck out 11 for Littlerock (3-18, 1-13 Golden League). Mariah Paiz was 2-for-3 with a solo home run for Eastside (2-18, 2-12), while Michelle Cannon and Jennifer Prather both went 2-for-3.
BaseballParaclete 8, Montclair Prep 3 LANCASTER - The Spirits finished in a three-way tie for third place in the Olympic League and must play today at 1 p.m. to determine which team qualifies for the playoffs. The Spirits face Valley Christian at 1 p.m. at Montclair Prep High and the winner will face L.A. Baptist at 3:30 p.m. The winner of that game qualifies for the postseason. Beau Lynch went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Tyler Lynch went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double and Matt Cordava had two hits, three RBI and a double.
Mojave 19, Desert 5 EDWARDS AFB - Bryant Bustamante went 3-for-3 with three RBI for the Mustangs in the final game of the regular season.
