RECREATION
While it looks like the most famous aircraft ever flown by NASA, this X-15 on a stick at Dryden Flight Research Center is actually an artful impostor, outwardly authentic in every detail. The late NASA pilot and administrator Milt Thompson wanted an X-15 to display, but only three of the craft were built. One crashed, one went to the Air Force Museum in Ohio and the other hangs in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The only thing left was to build this replica. NASA and Air Force test pilots flew the X-15s locally 199 times from 1959 to 1968.
