 Valley Press file photoBIG PLANE ON CAMPUSThe Douglas D-558-II Skyrocket, one of only two built to explore the unknown at Edwards Air Force Base, occupies an honored place in the heart of the Antelope Valley College campus.The Skyrocket, placed on a column built by Douglas Aircraft Co., was dedicated May 10, 1963. The historic plane was donated by NASA, the Navy, the Air Force, the Flight Test Center and Douglas. On Nov. 20, 1953, a Skyrocket made aviation history when it was launched from a B-29 and hit Mach 2, twice the speed of sound. |
